Making the Most of September in Athens, GA: Things to Do, Events & Local Favorites

September is one of my favorite times of year in Athens, Georgia. Summer is starting to wind down, football season is back, the local event calendar fills up, and you can finally start looking forward to those cooler fall days.

Whether you live here, just moved to Athens, or you're visiting for a weekend, there is plenty happening around town this September.

Here are some of the best ways to make the most of September 2026 in Athens, GA.

🏈 Experience a Georgia Football Saturday

It wouldn't be September in Athens without Georgia football.

The Bulldogs have three home games at Sanford Stadium this September:

September 5: Georgia vs. Tennessee State
September 12: Georgia vs. Western Kentucky
September 26: Georgia vs. Oklahoma

Even if you don't have tickets, there's nothing quite like being in Athens on game day. Grab brunch, walk through campus, find a spot downtown to watch the game, or just enjoy the energy that takes over the city when the Dawgs are home.

Local tip: If you're not going to the game, make restaurant reservations early and give yourself extra time getting around town. Athens gets BUSY on football weekends.

🌻 Catch the Sunflower Concert Series at the Botanical Garden

One of Athens' prettiest places gets even better with live music.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia hosts the final Sunflower Concert Series event of the season on September 15.

Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy an evening of music surrounded by the gardens. It's one of those uniquely Athens experiences that makes you appreciate having the Botanical Garden right in our backyard.

While you're there, make time to walk some of the garden trails if the weather is nice.

🛍️ Spend a Morning at the Athens Farmers Market

If you haven't visited the Athens Farmers Market at Bishop Park, September is a great time to go.

Browse locally grown produce, flowers, meats, baked goods, prepared foods and handmade goods from local vendors.

There are also Wednesday evening markets at Creature Comforts, making this an easy midweek outing if your Saturdays are already spoken for.

Grab a coffee, wander through the vendors and make a morning—or evening—of it.

🎶 See Some Live Music

Athens and live music have gone together for decades, and September has plenty of opportunities to catch a show.

A few September highlights include:

September 11: Yacht Rock Schooner at Live Wire Athens
September 18: Ella Langley at Akins Ford Arena
September 25: Flatland Cavalry with Corey Smith at Akins Ford Arena
September 25: Drivin' N Cryin' at Live Wire Athens
September 29: The Dream Syndicate with Elf Power at the 40 Watt Club

And that's only scratching the surface. Check the calendars at the Georgia Theatre, 40 Watt Club, Live Wire, Hendershot's and other local venues for smaller shows throughout the month.

🌎 Celebrate at LatinFest

Head downtown on September 19 for LatinFest, held on Washington Street between Pulaski and Lumpkin.

This community celebration brings Latin American culture to downtown Athens with music, dancing, food and festivities.

It's a fun opportunity to experience another side of Athens' incredibly diverse local community.

🦋 Take the Kids to Insectival

Have little ones who are fascinated by butterflies, bugs and all things creepy-crawly?

Insectival returns to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia on September 27.

It's an annual family-friendly event focused on insects and their important role in our environment—and a great excuse to spend another day exploring the Botanical Garden.

🎨 Explore the Local Art Scene

September is also a good month to slow down and explore some of the arts and culture we have right here in Athens.

Visit the Georgia Museum of Art, wander downtown looking for Athens' public art and murals, or explore one of our local galleries.

On September 19, the Georgia Museum of Art hosts its Family Day: Homegrown, another good option for families looking for something different to do.

🌳 Get Outside Before Fall Officially Arrives

September weather in Georgia can still feel a lot like summer, but the occasional cooler morning is a reminder that fall is coming.

Take advantage of it!

Walk the trails at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, explore Sandy Creek Park, walk or bike the Firefly Trail, or spend an afternoon at Lake Herrick.

If you've lived in Athens for years and haven't explored some of our local trails and parks, September is a great month to change that.

🍽️ Pick a Local Restaurant You've Never Tried

Here's an easy September challenge: pick one locally owned Athens restaurant you've never tried and go!

We have such a great food scene that it's easy to keep returning to the same favorites and forget how many other places are out there.

Try a new brunch spot, grab dinner downtown, visit a local brewery, find a patio on a cooler evening, or finally stop at that restaurant you've driven past a hundred times.

Supporting local businesses is one of the best ways to experience Athens—and you may find a new favorite.

🏡 Take a Drive Around Athens

You knew the Realtor in me was going to sneak this one in somewhere.

September is a beautiful time to explore some of the different communities around Athens and Northeast Georgia.

Take a drive through Five Points, Normaltown or Boulevard, head toward Watkinsville and Oconee County, or venture out into some of the more rural areas surrounding Athens.

One of the things I love most about living here is how quickly the scenery changes. You can go from downtown Athens and the UGA campus to historic neighborhoods, farmland and quiet country roads in a matter of minutes.

September is really just the beginning.

Make the Most of September in Athens

One of the best things about living in Athens is that there's almost always something happening—you just have to know where to look.

So this September, go to the farmers market. Catch a show. Cheer on the Dawgs. Walk a trail. Try a new restaurant. Spend an afternoon downtown. And maybe discover something in Athens you've never experienced before.
