If you’re looking for something to do in Athens this weekend, this one has a little bit of everything.

Here are five local events 5 Things to Do in Athens, GA This Weekend | October 16–18, 2026

worth putting on your calendar.

1. Historic Athens Porchfest

Sunday, October 18 | 1:00–8:00 PM
Seven historic Athens neighborhoods

Porchfest is one of those events that feels completely and unmistakably Athens.

More than 200 performances will take place on porches, front lawns, and community spaces throughout Boulevard, Buena Vista Heights, Cobbham, Newtown, Normaltown, Pulaski Heights, and Reese-Hancock.

In addition to live music, this year’s event includes an Indie South Vendors Market, food trucks, a Kids Zone, Boo-le-Bark, and free hop-on/hop-off trolley transportation between areas.

Cost: Free
Good to know: No ticket is required, and the event is scheduled to happen rain or shine.

2. Audiobook Hike on the Firefly Trail

Saturday, October 17 | 9:30–11:30 AM
Firefly Trail

If you like your weekend plans a little quieter and more offbeat, this is a fun one.

Bring an audiobook already downloaded to your phone, grab your headphones, and walk the Firefly Trail at your own pace while you listen.

After the hike, participants can hang out for snacks, drinks, and audiobook recommendations.

Ages: 18+
Cost: Free
Good to know: Advance online registration is required.

3. The MOTUS Project at Sandy Creek Nature Center

Saturday, October 17 | 9:00–11:00 AM
Sandy Creek Nature Center
205 Old Commerce Road, Athens

This adult nature program focuses on the MOTUS wildlife tracking project and current research happening in the area.

Led by UGA’s Cody Cox, the program offers a closer look at how wildlife researchers track animal movement and what that data can tell us about local ecosystems.

It’s a good pick for anyone who enjoys nature but wants something a little more educational than a standard hike.

Ages: 18+
Cost: $5 per person
Good to know: Online registration is required.

4. Boo-le-Bark on the Boulevard

Sunday, October 18
Costume Contest at 3:00 PM | Parade at 4:30 PM
Boulevard neighborhood

Porchfest plus dogs in Halloween costumes? That’s a pretty solid Sunday.

Boo-le-Bark returns to the Boulevard neighborhood with its annual costume contest and dog parade, beginning and ending near Boulevard and Barber Street.

It’s one of those quirky local events that makes this weekend feel especially Athens.

The event also supports vulnerable animals in the Athens area.

Cost: Check current event details for participation information.
Good to know: Off-street parking is available at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, with additional street parking nearby.

5. Porchfest Tasting + Live Music

625 Barber Street, Suite 120

If you want to ease into Porchfest with something food-and-drink focused, Tonique Bottle Co. is celebrating its second anniversary with a free pop-up tasting during the festivities.

This weekend is a great example of why Athens is such a fun place to live.

You can spend Saturday walking the Firefly Trail or learning about local wildlife, then spend Sunday wandering historic neighborhoods, listening to live music, checking out local vendors, and watching dogs parade around in Halloween costumes.

That’s a pretty good fall weekend.

I’ll keep sharing local events, outdoor activities, food finds, and things worth putting on your calendar each week.

If you’re thinking about moving to Athens or Northeast Georgia, or you just want to discover more of what makes this area such a great place to live, follow along.
