Don’t Miss the Deadline — It Could Save You Hundreds

If you purchased a home in 2025 and it’s your primary residence, this is your reminder to file for your Homestead Exemption before the deadline.

Many homeowners don’t realize this isn’t automatic — you must apply to receive the property tax savings.

💰 What is a Homestead Exemption?

Homestead Exemption reduces the taxable value of your primary residence, which lowers your property taxes each year.

In Georgia, this can save homeowners hundreds — sometimes even thousands — over time.

⏰ Deadline to File

In most counties, the deadline is April 1, 2026, for homes purchased in 2025.

If you miss it, you typically have to wait until the following year.

📍 Where to File (Athens & Northeast Georgia)

You must file through the Tax Commissioner or the Tax Assessor’s Office in the county where the home is located.

📋 What You’ll Need

Typically, you’ll need:

✔ Georgia driver’s license with your new address
✔ Vehicle registration showing the same address
✔ Social Security numbers for owners
✔ Closing documents (sometimes requested)
✔ Proof the home is your primary residence

Requirements can vary slightly by county.

Both spouses may need to be listed depending on ownership
