5 Things to Do in Athens, GA This Weekend | October 9–11, 2026

by Leah Leggett

If you’re looking for something to do in Athens this weekend, this is a good one.

October is in full swing, and the calendar is packed with local food, outdoor events, live music, markets, and a few uniquely Athens happenings you probably won’t find everywhere else.

Here are five events worth checking out this weekend.

1. Athens Vulture Festival

Saturday, October 10 | 8:00 AM–Noon
ACC Landfill Outdoor Classroom
5700 Lexington Road, Winterville

This may be the most uniquely Athens event happening this weekend.

The Athens Vulture Festival kicks off with an early-morning bird walk and continues with live animals, educational programs, local artists, family activities, a costume contest, and presentations from the Auburn University Raptor Center.

There are also guided tours focused on composting and landfill operations, making it part wildlife festival, part behind-the-scenes local experience.

Cost: Check current event details before heading out.
Good to know: The event begins at 8:00 AM, and pets should be left at home.

2. 41st Annual North Georgia Folk Festival

Saturday, October 10 | 11:00 AM–9:00 PM
Sandy Creek Park
400 Bob Holman Road, Athens

If you want to make a full day of it, the North Georgia Folk Festival is one of the best options this weekend.

Now in its 41st year, the festival brings together live music, traditional arts, craftspeople, food, and family activities in the park.

The music lineup spans a variety of styles, including bluegrass, blues, Irish, Mexican, and mariachi traditions, so there’s a little something for everyone throughout the day.

Tickets: Around $17 for adults, $10 for students, and free for children under 14.
Good to know: This is an all-day outdoor event, so bring a chair or blanket and plan to stay awhile.

3. Market Day & Chili Cook-Off

Saturday, October 10 | 3:00–5:00 PM
Historic Athens Welcome Center
280 E. Dougherty Street, Athens

If food is more your speed, this one belongs on your list.

Market Day & Chili Cook-Off brings together local food vendors, baked goods, specialty products, live music, and free samples, with the chili cook-off as the main event.

Visitors can taste the entries and vote for their favorite.

It feels more like a neighborhood gathering than a big commercial festival, which makes it a great afternoon stop.

Cost: Free
Good to know: No attendee registration is currently listed.

4. Fall Renaissance Faire at Athentic Brewing Co.

Saturday, October 10 | Noon–8:00 PM
Athentic Brewing Co.
108 Park Avenue, Athens

For something a little different, Athentic Brewing is hosting a fall Renaissance Faire with local artisans, musicians, vendors, and old-world-style demonstrations and activities.

Costumes are encouraged, but definitely not required.

This is a fun option if you’re looking for something casual, quirky, and easy to drop into for a couple of hours.

Cost: Free admission
Good to know: Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

5. Sandy Creek Park Open House + Movies by Moonlight

Sunday, October 11 | 3:00–9:00 PM
Sandy Creek Park
400 Bob Holman Road, Athens

Sunday brings a full afternoon and evening of free activities at Sandy Creek Park.

The Open House includes crafts, field games, inflatables, and a photo booth. Bike Athens will also host a true-beginner bike session from 3:00–5:00 PM.

Later in the day, you can catch the Sandy Creek Hootenanny before settling in for an outdoor screening of Harry and the Hendersons at 7:00 PM.

Cost: Free beginning at 3:00 PM
Good to know: Bring a blanket or chairs for the movie.

A Few More Weekend Ideas

There are a couple of other local events worth keeping in mind:

Athens Farmers Market
Saturday, October 10 | 8:00 AM–Noon
Bishop Park

Shop local produce, prepared foods, flowers, handmade goods, and more from area farms and makers.

AthHalf Half Marathon + AthFest Educates 5K
Saturday and Sunday

One of Athens’ signature running weekends returns with routes through downtown, historic neighborhoods, and the UGA campus, plus live music along the course.

If you’re not running, it can still be fun to head downtown and cheer people on.

Make the Most of the Weekend

This weekend has a little bit of everything — wildlife, food, local music, outdoor fun, and some wonderfully offbeat Athens events.

That’s one of the things I love most about living here. There’s always something happening that feels local, community-focused, and a little different from the usual weekend routine.

I’ll keep sharing my favorite local events, outdoor activities, food finds, and things worth putting on your calendar each week.

If you’re thinking about moving to Athens or Northeast Georgia, or you just want to discover more of what makes this area such a great place to live, follow along.
